Before your first session

Before your first breathwork session

What a first session usually looks like, without any assumptions about what you already know.

What to wear or bring

Wear something that does not make the ribs, waist, or belly feel restricted. A light layer and water may be useful, depending on the setting.

What happens on arrival

The facilitator should explain the kind of breathing you will be doing, the pace, and what the session may include. You may sit or lie down and begin by noticing your ordinary breath before adding structure.

Experience needed

None. Breathwork can be as simple as paced breathing or a longer exhale. More active methods should be explained before you begin.

If you cannot do a movement

If a breathing pattern feels too strong or uncomfortable, return to your normal breath and tell the facilitator. You do not need to push through the pace.

Private or group

Both. Private sessions allow more individual pacing. Group sessions often follow one shared pattern with guidance from the facilitator.

Good to tell them

Tell the facilitator about any health condition, pregnancy, medication, or prior experience that could affect how you respond to more active breath practices, and ask whether their method is appropriate for you.

What surprises people

Not all breathwork is deep or intense. A session may be quiet and measured, or much more active. The method matters.
